Hrm...I'm not sure about this smoking bill. I'm ok with the regulation of nicotine in cigarettes by the FDA. But giving the FDA power over advertising and marketing ?? That's a serious [commercial] free speech violation. Especially if a company like Camel is not allowed to sell hats and t-shirts with their brand name or logo on it. And then regulating "flavors", come on -- that's *ridiculous*, especially if you say it aloud. "The FDA will control what flavors of cigarettes are allowed".
Also, the people calling for the US to step into Iran need to shut the hell up. Especially coming from those that opposed Iraq intervention. I'm all for Iran overthrowing their theocracy -- but it's not our place (and I'm proud of Obama for being moderate, unlike his VP).
It's interesting to see how the different parties in power get away with different things their own party supposedly stands for. Not that I'm surprised. Those attached to their political party are much more about the ra-ra than the details.

| windows 7 |
[10 May 2009|03:00pm] |
I installed Windows 7, 64-bit. It is my first foray into a 64-bit desktop OS. I grabbed one of my extra hard drives sitting in the closet and put it on there as a clean install. So far, I really like it.
The built in Windows Media Center found my TV tuner and set itself up in a few clicks. NICE! My Logitech web cam software won't install, but Skype found my webcam and it seems to work ok. Since I've moved to using things like Evernote and Dropbox , getting setup into my new environment was pretty damn simple.
Flash doesn't have a working player for 64-bit browsers -- and Chrome took an extra switch to make it work. But I've had minimal problems so far.
iTunes 64-bit and the new Windows Media Player run *much* faster. The new WMP is great! The interface has improved and so far I have not had to install any codecs! Jumping around a large movie over the network is fast too.
They seem to have disabled the "windows classic" look (though I haven't looked too hard) -- which I'm sure will upset a few people who resist change -- but the Start Menu is more flexible than Vista. The new icon-based task bar is clean, but will take a little getting used to.
The default UAC settings (the pop ups that ask you if you're sure you want to execute something) are much less annoying than Vista -- and disabling it or changing the settings is easy to find.
I'll be switching back and forth between this and my Vista 32-bit install until I'm more comfortable. Microsoft has done a great job of building buzz for Win7 -- releasing it free to the public for testing is one of the smartest things they have done. I've been worried that MS has been rushing Win7 to the street -- but so far it's been smooth sailing.
More another time.

| the flu scare |
[29 Apr 2009|03:34pm] |
There's a lot of mockery about the overreaction to the N1H1 flu.
Personally, I don't have a problem with the overreaction (though my mind is subject to change) 1) This is a strain we don't have immunities for like we do with other flu strains. 2) Even if this is an overreaction, I see it as practice for a potentially more serious virus.
that's all for now.

If you watch Back to the Future backwards, you'll see a cool kid go back in time to turn his parents into losers.

| wtf kind of logic |

wtf kind of circular logic is this ???

"The world said yes to climate action, now governments must follow," the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) said Sunday, a day after hundreds of millions of people worldwide followed its call to turn off lights for a full hour.
If we're going worldwide with the numbers, then hundreds of millions is not an overwhelming number. Of course, hippies are really bad at math. What about the BILLIONS of people who didn't participate ? Aren't they sending the real message?
And BIG FUCKING DEAL !? People turned their lights off for an hour. You want a fucking cookie? Even if these self-righteous fart sniffers lived by candle light for a week -- they still have their refrigerators running.
These mass delusions of self importance really irritate me.
