last week's movie marathon
(Note I worked on this entry, there are links and everything...almost like a real blog)
Last Saturday I went to the Alamo Drafthouse Grindhouse marathon. It started at midnight and ended at 11am. *Ouch* Yes. It is certainly not an event for everyone. Only sick people with toned asses.
So I went with James and Angela who came down from Dallas with an extra ticket. We started off our night with some queso and food at Paradise. Walked through the raining 37 degree weather back to Drafthouse at 10:45pm. Fortunately they let us hang out in the lobby. We were there early. Maybe 10 people in front of us. We were able to score good middle seats.
I decided booze and caffeine were a negative. If I am going to last 12 hours, I can't crash. I was very chill, almost sleepy, I had taken a 3 hour nap before showering and heading downtown. With a few stretches I sat down. The marathon started with an introduction by the drafthouse really tall guy with glasses who needs a haircut and stylist but seems like he would be an awesome guy to rap movies and random shit with. He hosted well. He knew the crowd. If you're going to host an 11 hour marathon, you have to be sick, if not sicker than the rest of us b-movie maniacs.
The show kicked off with a trailer for "Hobo with a Shotgun" which can be viewed here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1LlazPgxK rA
Then it was time for "The Losers" aka Nam's Angels. Some Hells Angel-type bikers are dropped into Vietnam to rescue a CIA operative. Starring William Smith (Falconetti in Rich Man, Poor Man and the guy Clint fights in Any Which Way You Can). I admitedly was asleep for most of this movie. It dragged. It was serious. But with the budget they had, it was very well done. It was not cheesy. But I'll skip a review and send you here: http://www.horrortalk.com/reviews/Losers/L osers.htm
Finally it is 6 am and time for some hicksploitation. Poor Pretty Eddie aka Black Vengence. Let's just throw out some keywords: Elvis impersonator, interracial rape, Lurch, a drunk and bloated Shelly Winters, feeding someone their dog to them, Slim Pickens, marriage, bar fights, and a beautiful strong black woman.
This movie is fucked up. Especially at 6am. But I stayed awake for the whole thing. I was into it. And damn was it good. It's not a movie for everyone. But for a 70s B movie, a real treat. Check out the pictures and story run down here: http://www.brainsonfilm.com/ppe.html
Between each of the films they showed 3 or 4 trailers from the 70s. Some were good. The worst I remember, a trailed called The Electric Chair. Horrible. It's now about 8am, the sun is coming up which we can see in the lobby as we chow down on a buffet of tacos and french toast. That hit the spot.
Then the highly anticipated Grindhouse. I think it's weird that I'm in the minority here, but I gotta say I loved Tarantino's Death Proof more than Rodriguez's Planet Terror (though I still enjoyed it). Tarantino has fantastic dialog and just a real warm feel to the movie. He pulls you along with the story so well. And I don't think there was a single effect in his movie. The stunts were fantastic and I couldn't help but cheer the movie along. Maybe people were expecting more of a horror or gore movie? I thought Death Proof really captured the 70s spirit and feel. Planet Terror was fun and campy, but that's more 80s to me. The 70s produced some very weird ass movies. Some of which I'm finding out, aren't that bad. Oh well. I look forward to owning Grindhouse on DVD. I hope they do something special with it. I understand the "trailer" for Machete is going to be a straight to video movie. Awesome.
Will I do another all night movie marathon? Totally.

| After a few B-trailers from the 70s, the night kicked off with an Italian movie The Boss with stone-cold-faced bad ass Henry Silva. It was a little slow, and I dozed off slightly. But I was awake and into it for the action scenes. Not much to say, Henry Silva is a bad ass hit man and is cold and crazy, yet smooth. If you like mafia movies, it's good. Just low budget. Also Alamo uses some clips from this movie (strangling a guy in a movie theater and a sniper in the projectionist booth) for their "shut up during the movie or we'll take your ass out" trailers. | ![]() |
![]() | Movie 2: Revenge of the Cheerleaders (1976) The definition of "zany comedy". It's got everything. Sex, drugs, dancing, titties, ass, bush and cock. But not just any cock. 1976 David Hasselhoff cock. He's a minor character in the movie -- but his name is Boner. The cheerleaders-gone-wild in this movie are fairly hot, even though one of them is pregnant. They party a lot, they skip class, they confiscate drugs from the other students and put it in the cafeteria food. Like I said: ZANY. I can't wait to Netflix this movie and share it with everyone. Apparently it's part of some Cheerleader trilogy. Best movie of the night (before Grindhouse). If you liked Rock n' Roll High School. This is what you really wanted to see. |
